Children and Disaster: Philippine Media Response
Date: 7.17.2008
The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries. It ranks 2nd in Asia and 4th in the world. The media, together with disaster response teams, is the quickest to get to the scene. The media’s contribution in disaster response is vital. However, there are many instances when media response, and the quality and sensitivity of the reports are questionable. This is a concern, especially when stories involve women and children. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Probe Media Foundation addressed the need for responsible broadcast journalism on children during disasters in with a 5-month long media fellowship.
The Children and Disaster: Philippine Media Response fellowship is a unique program that trained eighteen broadcasters from various television and radio stations from different parts of the country in responsible and informed reporting on disasters and emergency situations—with special focus on children.
The contents of this DVD are television and radio reports by some of the best broadcasters from the Philippines’ top radio and television networks.
