A brief background on the fellowship program.

    Poverty and Human Interest

One of the main consequences of overpopulation is poverty. Families of five children or more struggle to survive on the little that their parents are able to provide. Solutions from local governments abound but actual assistance rarely reaches the beneficiaries for many reasons. The pieces in videos 2 to 8 feature the plight of evacuees from conflict-stricken areas in the South, child workers in Bacolod haciendas, commercial sex workers in Laoag and Samar, and minors involved in gangs in Cotabato and Manila.

Education and Literacy

The impact of population on education and literacy is a disturbing reality. The stories in videos 9 to 13 show that without the proper teaching methods, orientation and awareness especially among the youth, myths about sex and sexuality are perpetuated. Less people learn about the risks. In this category we see stories focusing on efforts to improve the education system in Iloilo City and Naga City, and the implementation of the World Food Program has affected education to address malnutrition and absenteeism and high dropout rates in schools in some areas in Cotabato city.

Contraceptives and Family Planning

The eventual pullout of USAID-funded contraceptives has a domino effect on population management movements. The features in videos 14 to 21 stress the importance of contraceptive self-reliance for local government units and the promotion of informed choice for family planning (which includes contraceptive use and natural family planning methods). Reports in this category also explore the effect of unintended pregnancies such as abandonment and abortion in General Santos City. Some of the reports stress that the success of family planning rests not just on the woman, but also on both sexual partners.

Development

People are the key components of development. But for any development effort to succeed, they need to be one with the local governments and funding organizations. The stories in videos 22 to 29 demonstrate how some of these efforts succeeded, and what lessons can be learned from those that failed. Stories in this category deal with housing concerns in Dumaguete and Naga City, small scale mining in Surigao City, the Metro gwapo "greening" program of MMDA in Manila, human trafficking in General Santos City, and the aftermath of the landslide in Ginsaugon, Southern Leyte. One format is a talk show in Cagayan de Oro on the merits of breastfeeding.
