IMAGING THE MEKONG (IM)
A Documentary Video Production Fellowship
For Filipino and Mekong Region Journalists

Probe Media Foundation, Inc. invites broadcast journalists (TV, film and video) to apply for the Imaging the Mekong Documentary Fellowship Program. The fellowship is an opportunity to create documentaries for the development of the Mekong region, which involves sharing of skills, talents, culture and experiences with other journalists from the Mekong Region - Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Yunnan-China Province. It focuses on the production of sounds and images of a Greater Mekong Subregion, and its potential for development by providing the faces, pictures, stories, problems and triumphs of the different sectors in the region.

The fellows will undergo a 30-day training in video documentary production in the Philippines in June 2003, production (shoot, write and edit) of a 15 to 20-minute documentary in the fellows' own country (with partner fellow) from July to November 2003, and a media forum in the region in December 2003.

The fellowship is organized by Probe Media Foundation, Inc. (PMFI), a Philippine-based non-profit foundation committed to promoting social justice and democracy, child and youth development, community capacity building through the training of communicators for development, specifically broadcast journalists. The project is financially supported by the Rockefeller Foundation (Southeast Asia).

Fellows will be given free air and land transportation, board and lodging during the training & forum, a sub-grant for documentary production, and an allowance. A total of twelve (12) fellowships will be awarded. They will be selected on the basis of their application, relevance of the program to their current practice and choice of documentary topic.

Deadline for submission of the application and requirements is on April 1, 2002.

Fellows must be:

Residents of the Greater Mekong Subregion (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Yunnan-China Province)
Working in television, video or film with one-year experience and/or employment in a media organization
Allowed by employer to take a leave during training and activities
Able to speak, write and understand basic English

Applicants are to submit the following:

Photocopy of passport
Letter from employer allowing applicant to attend fellowship activities
Proposal of not less than 500 words describing the 15 to 20 minute documentary they want to create, the reason for choosing this topic, the target audience and the desired effect of the documentary. Topic of the documentary must be on a Mekong cross-border issue or an issue that affects at least two countries in the region. Final documentary may be written in their local language.
